On November 1st, Mike Hooks participated with CCA Louisiana and Phillips 66 to increase awareness for conservation in Southwest Louisiana by constructing and placing artificial floating islands.

Hooks was able to provide some of the necessary equipment used to place the floating islands and to complete the project. Many of our employees volunteered their time by participating in this event that brought together local industry and elementary students to promote education and activism for for environmental restoration in Prien Lake, near Lake Charles, LA.

These floating islands are made from artificial structures that help protect the existing shoreline that is steadily eroding. The students and volunteers planted the islands with marsh grasses and anchored the islands into place near the shore. Over time, the grass roots will grow through the “island” and anchor themselves to the lake bed restoring the natural root system that helps protect the soils and shoreline.

“In two years, you will not be able to tell the difference between these artificial floating islands and the native marsh.”
